"After tax" and "net salary" get used as if they were one number. On a Malaysian payslip they are not. Tax here is the PCB estimate. Net pay is what remains after that tax and after employee EPF, employee SOCSO, and employee EIS. EPF is not a tax. It is a contribution, and the employee's share also feeds a relief capped at RM4,000 a year. The relief reduces the tax. The contribution is still deducted. Quoting only the after-tax line as take-home pay leaves the contributions looking optional.
Chargeable income in this estimate is the annual gross minus the reliefs the form actually applies. Personal relief is RM9,000. A spouse, if you tick it, is RM4,000. Each child under 18 that you count is RM2,000. A disabled individual can add the extra RM7,000. EPF relief stops at RM4,000 even when twelve months of contributions are higher. SOCSO and EIS together stop at RM350. Anything else you will claim — a lifestyle relief, a parent, an SSPN figure — goes in the extra annual box, as one ringgit total, not as a second tax engine.
The resident scale charges nothing on the first RM5,000 of chargeable income, then 1 percent, 3 percent, 6 percent, and up the published steps. If chargeable income is not over RM35,000, a RM400 rebate can wipe the year's tax, and the unused rebate is not paid back. That is why RM3,000 a month, single, age 30, Malaysian, can show PCB of zero and still not be "tax free" in the sense of having no other deductions: employee EPF, SOCSO, and EIS still come off, and the net is RM2,627.20. The RM5,000 example is past the rebate. Chargeable income RM46,650, annual tax RM1,299, monthly PCB RM108.25, net RM4,269.95.
The form on this page is the net-pay form on purpose. The big number is take-home. The tax line inside the breakdown is the after-tax step, so you can subtract only that line from gross if a form literally asks for salary after tax and will add the contributions itself. Read the labels before you copy one number into both boxes.
Official PCB looks at the year to date and the months left. A bonus month, a benefit in kind, or a mid-year relief change will not match a page that repeats one month twelve times. Non-residents are not this scale. The 2026 rate notes say which brackets the file is willing to stand behind. Overtime and a civil-service slip are different pages because their deductions are not this private-sector stack.
