A personal loan calculator is useful only if you know which kind of rate the percent is. This page assumes reducing balance: interest each month on what you still owe, and a level payment that clears the loan in the years you type. A lot of personal loans advertised as a single percent are flat rate instead. Flat rate means the interest is the original amount times the rate times the years, and that lump is then split with the principal into equal payments. The same "8 percent" can be a very different monthly figure, and the flat version usually costs more. If the letter says flat, do not expect this table to reproduce it. The flat-rate car loan on the salary calculator is the other method, for hire purchase. This page will not pretend they are one product.
The placeholders are a shape, not a deal: an amount like 20,000, a rate like 8, a term like 5 years. Type your own. The payment is principal × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1), with r the monthly rate. The table lists every month: payment, principal, interest, balance. Early rows are mostly interest. Later rows are mostly principal. That is what reducing balance means, and it is why paying a lump sum early, which this page does not simulate, changes the interest more than paying the same lump sum near the end. The total interest under the payment is the number to put next to a flat-rate quote when you are comparing cost rather than the advertised percent.
Fees are absent on purpose. A processing fee paid up front is not in the instalment. Insurance tacked onto the principal is not here unless you add it to the amount yourself before you calculate. A rate that steps up after a year is not here; the rate you type is the rate for the whole term. If the contract is more complicated than one rate and one term, this table is a sketch of the plain version, and the contract is the version you would pay. The loan calculator is the same sketch with the formula written out. The Malaysian home loan page is the same sketch over a longer term, with the daily-rest warning that matters more for a mortgage than for a five-year personal loan.
Nothing is sent to a lender, because there is no lender on this site. There is no income check and no stored application. The RM label is a label. Use the table to see the path of the balance, then read the actual product before you sign anything.
